Weekly News Letter - 14th April 2021

St James

A Very Warm Welcome to Everyone

We will broadcast worship live on Facebook or Youtube.  St James Facebook link    St James YouTube page

It was very sad to hear the news of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Our prayers are with Her Majesty the Queen and all the Royal Family at this time of their loss.

On Sunday it was good for us to be able to pause and remember Prince Philip, giving thanks for his life of service. We will, of course continue praying, now and on Sunday.

The restrictions necessitated by the pandemic are particularly felt at times of grief and funerals. The most natural and necessary ways in which families and friends reach out and embrace one another have not been possible.  Even royal deaths are not shielded from the impact of this. For Prince Philip physical memorial books have not been advised, instead anyone who wishes to write a memorial is directed to the church of England's memorial page

https://www.churchofengland.org/remembering-his-royal-highness-prince-philip   Or on the Royal Family's website  https://www.royal.uk

A prayer at this time:

Father of all mercies and God of all consolation,

you pursue us with untiring love
and dispel the shadow of death
with the bright dawn of life.
Give courage to The Queen and the Royal Family
in their loss and sorrow.
Be their refuge and strength, O Lord;
reassure them of your continuing love
and lift them from the depths of grief
into the peace and light of your presence.

Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
by dying has destroyed our death,
and by rising, restored our life.

Your Holy Spirit, our comforter,
speaks for us in groans too deep for words.
Come alongside your people,
remind them of your eternal presence
and give them your comfort and strength. Amen.

As we emerge from the pandemic there are significant challenges which we have to face, but also new opportunities.  We have experienced afresh God's faithfulness in this most difficult of times.  Please come as we assess how things have been, where we are, and where we want to travel towards in the year to come.  Bring your questions and prayers.

Please consider if you could serve your church by joining the PCC.  Churches flourish when everyone plays their part.

This year we have elections for: Two Churchwardens, Four Deputy Churchwardens, One Deanery Synod Representative and seven PCC members

If you would like to know more of what is involved please do speak to me or Bob Greene or Jean Heaton our churchwardens.

With every blessing,

The Third Sunday of Easter 18th April - 'Then he opened their minds'.  Please join us in-person or on-line to worship together.  To catch up with reality our thinking has to constantly change.  People wrongly think that curiosity is the opposite to faith. Curiosity actually feeds faith.  Come and see how our minds can be opened to the reality of the meaning of life.

Financial Support

"God loves cheerful givers" 2 Cor 9.7

We are extremely grateful to everyone who supports St James' financially.

This support enables us to be at the heart of the community sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.  As part of a diocesan family of churches we also support less well resourced parishes in other parts of the diocese.  Since lockdown, as collections during services have been limited, we have suffered a significant drop in our income.  Unless this income is recovered the things we can do as a church will be severely curtailed.

I would like to ask everyone to consider two things.

1)  If you are not doing so already, please consider setting up a standing order through your bank. (Thank you to those who, since lockdown, have already made this transition.) This is the easiest way to give, and it is Covid- secure. The form for giving and Gift Aid is here:  Regular Giving Form

Our bank details are:  Wetherby Parochial Church Council account at NatWest Bank PLC  Sort Code: 55-81-11  Account No: 04416775

2)   If you are able to, please consider increasing your giving. Like everyone else each year inflation means that our costs increase. If it is a while since you increased your regular giving please consider doing so. Or perhaps you might be able to consider a one-off gift to St James', in which case you could support a specific area of church life, Worship, Mission or Fabric?

If you require any further information please contact our Stewardship Officer, Jill Rose 01937 586 640. All information is treated in the strictest confidence.

My old vicar used suggest to people that they give as much as makes them joyful. I thought that was a rather good way of putting it. As St Paul says, "God loves cheerful giver". 2 Cor 9.7

Thank you for all your support. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
