Weekly News Letter - 29th November 2020

St James

A Very Warm Welcome to Everyone

We are all longing and waiting for the speedy roll out of vaccines so that life can return to normal. Advent, which begins on Sunday, is a season of longing and waiting.  It is the countdown to Christmas (We hope you have your Advent Calendars).  During Advent we also look beyond Christmas.  We look forward to the time when Christ will come again and complete the healing of the world.

This year our waiting and longing in Advent takes on a special poignancy.  We look forward to a Christmas that will be far from normal.  In a world scared by Covid-19 we long for the healing and transformation that only Christ can bring.  Along with the earliest of Christians we pray, that most guttural of prayers; "Marantha, come Lord Jesus".

As Christmas approaches like an oncoming express train, Advent can often rush by.  It can be a challenge to find ways to truly inhabit this season of waiting and longing.  One way of doing so is to join us in prayer.  The Reverend Janet Cox has kindly put together prayer for each Sunday of Advent which can be used in our homes with our families.  The idea is that we pause, light a candle, and pray these short prayers with our household.  The prayers are here to download and print.
Advent 2020 - A4 version.pdf   There are hard copies in Church and they can be distributed.  Please join us.

A week on Sunday (6 December), in a limited and controlled way, we will be able gather again for worship, but we will not be able to sing.  We will continue to broadcast our worship from church, gathering and singing in our homes.  Which brings us to our Digital Mission Appeal.

We have had a fantastic response to the appeal.  So many thanks to everyone who has already supported this.  Together with Gift Aid, we have so far raised £4,775 towards our target of £7,500.  This is an amazing start, thank you to all who have so generously given.  If you would like to help us to reach people, who for whatever reason, cannot attend physical church, the attached leaflet gives further details about this appeal and how you can support it. Please mark any payments Digital Mission Appeal.  Digital Mission Leaflet.pdf

We do hope that you will join us from home to share, and pass on, the hope and light of Christ.

Zoom Coffee
We can't meet physically for coffee but we can meet virtually.  After the Sunday Service - about 10.45am the Reverend Janet Cox will host our virtual coffee.  It is a really good opportunity to see people - those you know and perhaps those you can get to know.  This is a great way of strengthening the community of the church in these lonely times.

All are very welcome.  Join Zoom Coffee Meeting ID: 776 8065 3677  Passcode: 9PYfgq

Advent Carol Service

Each year usually the choir lead us in a beautiful and moving Advent Carol Service.  Sadly the present restrictions have made this impossible this year.  The Friends of Wetherby Church Music, however, have kindly put on Youtube a previous year's service.  The service can be accessed via this link: https://youtu.be/0bemlbCFyhI

Remembrance Tree - Light up the world
Each Advent we look to the coming Light.  Boy, do we need light now.

Once again be a Remembrance Tree in the Church Grounds, which will be illuminated on Advent Sunday, the 29 November, and remain lit until Epiphany, the 6 January. Dedicating a light on the tree will provide an opportunity to remember someone special at this time.  As in previous years, your name, and the names of those you wish to be remembered, will also be listed in the Memorial Book in Church.

If you would like to dedicate a light please contact Val Lumsden valandjimlumsden@gmail.com  or 01937 584760

Toy Collection - Sunday 13th December
Restrictions permitting, we are planning on holding our annual Toy Service.  The toys collected will be distributed by our sister church of St James' in Seacroft.  Each year we have done this your generosity has been greatly appreciated by families, I am sure this year the toys will be especially appreciated.

If you would like to support this please bring along new, unwrapped toys or gifts to St James'.  If you can't attend on the day, gifts can be left in the church porch 10.00 - 11.00am Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Every year gifts for teenagers are particularly appreciated.

Archbishops' Call to Prayer

The Archbishops, along with leaders of other churches, have called for this month to be a month of prayer for our nation.  We are asked to pray at 6.00pm each evening.

Concise resources are on the Church of England website which you can accessed here.  Church of England website   These short resources can be used to pray alone or with your household.

If you would like to pray with others from St James', the Reverend Janet Cox, is hosting 10 minutes prayer every evening at 6.00pm.  You can access this via this Zoom link Evening Prayer   Meeting ID: 716 3190 4008  Password: 8QcDqV

We hope you will join with Christians up and down our land praying for our nation.  As the Archbishops' write, "we know that we are in the faithful hands of the risen Christ who knows our weaknesses, tiredness and struggles and whose steadfast love endures forever".

Financial Support

"God loves cheerful givers" 2 Cor 9.7

We are extremely grateful to everyone who supports St James' financially.

This support enables us to be at the heart of the community sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.  As part of a diocesan family of churches we also support less well resourced parishes in other parts of the diocese.

Since lockdown, as collections during services have not been possible, we have suffered a significant drop in our income.  Unless this income is recovered the things we can do as a church will be severely curtailed.

I would like to ask everyone to consider two things.

1)  If you are not doing so already, please consider setting up a standing order through your bank. (Thank you to those who, since lockdown, have already made this transition.) This is the easiest way to give, and it is Covid- secure. The form for giving and Gift Aid is here:  Regular Giving Form

Our bank details are:  Wetherby Parochial Church Council account at NatWest Bank PLC  Sort Code: 55-81-11  Account No: 04416775

2)   If you are able to, please consider increasing your giving. Like everyone else each year inflation means that our costs increase. If it is a while since you increased your regular giving please consider doing so. Or perhaps you might be able to consider a one-off gift to St James', in which case you could support a specific area of church life, Worship, Mission or Fabric?

If you require any further information please contact our Stewardship Officer, Jill Rose 01937 586 640. All information is treated in the strictest confidence.

My old vicar used suggest to people that they give as much as makes them joyful. I thought that was a rather good way of putting it. As St Paul says, "God loves cheerful giver". 2 Cor 9.7

Thank you for all your support. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Food Bank - Food needed

The Food Bank has asked that we convey thanks to everyone who has contributed to it.  Thank you.  This is a very good cause to support as it helps the most vulnerable. There remains need for this help. Non-perishable food can be left in the church porch. Thank you.
