Holy Week

This weeks National Day of Reflection

Easter Worship

We are resuming in-person worship on Easter Day. Alleluia!

In many ways what we go back to will be the same as when we were worshipping at Christmas. There will be social-distancing, face-coverings, contact tracing and so on. The kind of precautions we have all got used to. In one important respect, however, things will be different. The government's regulations around singing are now significantly stricter. Sadly, therefore, we will not be able to enjoy the choir belting out the 'Hallelujah Chorus', or the Worship Group leading us in 'O' Happy Day!'. Nevertheless, rest assured, at our 09.30  and 11.00 services there will be music.

St Augustine said "We are an Easter people and our song is alleluia." This 'alleluia' is a song of the triumph of God's life over our death. But it is vital to remember that the 'alleluia' we sing contains also the crying of Peter after he denied Christ, the wailing of the women at the tomb - both when they anointed Jesus' dead body, and also when they went to the empty tomb and thought Jesus had been taken away.

Our Easter song of Alleluia contains both joyous and despondent notes. It is a song born of the God who in Jesus is with us in the world of death and of life, in the world of disappointment and success. God is with us  in times when we can't sing, as well as times when we can raise the roof. God is with us in the world as it is, even though it is not what we want it to be.

With every blessing,

Ps Details about our services is below. Booking essential for 9.30 Easter Parish Communion and 11.00 Easter Worship @11 Holy Communion

Sunday 28th March - Palm Sunday

10.00am Sunday Worship (live on Facebook and YouTube)

Please join us for our worship on Sunday as, in our journey through the wilderness of Lent, we reach Jerusalem and Jesus spectacular entry into the city.  Do we see the King of Kings or a threat to our autonomy?

Even though we are in our own homes we can still worship together.  Indeed it is vital that we do.  All are most welcome on Facebook or Youtube. St James Facebook link    St James YouTube page

Zoom Coffee - after Church on Sunday

It is nice to see people, even if it's only virtually!  Do please join us for Zoom Coffee immediately after our worship on Sunday. Stay as long or as short a time as you like (if you are shy like me it will be a relief to know that you can leave any time). Usually we say hello then break into two sessions of ten minutes chat.  Your face may make all the difference to another person's day (this isn't hyperbole).

Please follow the link to join us. Zoom link - coffee after church on Sunday   Meeting ID: 184 242 660

Oberammergau 2022

Some of us were hoping to go to Oberammergau last year to see the famous Passion Play that is performed by locals every 10 years.  Sadly it was postponed until 2022, but this Ash Wednesday the decree went out that all the men in the village taking part should stop having their hair cut in preparation.  Peter and I transferred our booking to a group from York who will be going on 18th May 2022.

The Revd Sue Rushton is leading the group and is very experienced.  She has indicated that any others from Wetherby who would like to join us would be warmly welcomed.   If you would like more details, please contact Janet & Peter Cox on 01937 584453 or peter_janet_cox@hotmail.com

Financial Support

"God loves cheerful givers" 2 Cor 9.7

We are extremely grateful to everyone who supports St James' financially.

This support enables us to be at the heart of the community sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.  As part of a diocesan family of churches we also support less well resourced parishes in other parts of the diocese.  Since lockdown, as collections during services have been limited, we have suffered a significant drop in our income.  Unless this income is recovered the things we can do as a church will be severely curtailed.

I would like to ask everyone to consider two things.

1)  If you are not doing so already, please consider setting up a standing order through your bank. (Thank you to those who, since lockdown, have already made this transition.) This is the easiest way to give, and it is Covid- secure. The form for giving and Gift Aid is here:  Regular Giving Form

Our bank details are:  Wetherby Parochial Church Council account at NatWest Bank PLC  Sort Code: 55-81-11  Account No: 04416775

2)   If you are able to, please consider increasing your giving. Like everyone else each year inflation means that our costs increase. If it is a while since you increased your regular giving please consider doing so. Or perhaps you might be able to consider a one-off gift to St James', in which case you could support a specific area of church life, Worship, Mission or Fabric?

If you require any further information please contact our Stewardship Officer, Jill Rose 01937 586 640. All information is treated in the strictest confidence.

My old vicar used suggest to people that they give as much as makes them joyful. I thought that was a rather good way of putting it. As St Paul says, "God loves cheerful giver". 2 Cor 9.7

Thank you for all your support. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
